We are manufacturing and distributing unique transfection and cell fusion reagents (GenomONE kits) making use of the membrane-fusing potential of HVJ Envelope (inactivated Sendai virus).HVJ-E is a nonproliferative and noninfectious vesicle about 300 nm in diameter on average purified after complete inactivation of Sendai virus genomic RNA. Since the F protein distributed on the surface of HVJ-E has high membrane-fusing activity comparable to that of live virus, it is possible to use HVJ-E itself as a cell-fusing agent or to introduce genes, proteins, anti-cancer agents, etc. in HVJ-E-incorporated form into cells for analysis of their functions. It has been very difficult to determine peptide biomarkers in blood, because most peptides are attached to a number of proteins and lipids during circulation. We produced BLOTCHIP®
mass analysis technology and obtained efficient disease oriented markers for diagnosis of cancers, RA, AMI, and so on. We are now developing versatile apparatus to measure those biomarkers in bed side manners in hospitals.

The lipofection method is a versatile method to deliver genes into mammalian cells. It is widely used in the field of life science including laboratory use to industrial production of biopharmaceuticals. We developed a lipofection enhancer based on histone deacetylase inhibitor. Gene expression can be increased to up to 10 times more than that of the conventional method by adding the enhancer to commercially available lipofection reagents. [Technology Classification]

We have conducted research related to synthesis of naturally occurring organic compounds and are studying about organic chemical aspects of sugars. Chemical synthesis of natural products involves preparing organic products with complex chemical-structures via various steps of chemical reactions from simple organic compounds. We have pursued artificially-synthesizing methods of pharmaceutically active compounds which naturally occur in trace amounts and novel functional compounds. We have also developed novel reactions in order to synthesize objective compounds efficiently. With regard to the studies about sugars, we have recently succeeded in altering to a great extent, the characteristic structures which various sugars have in nature. Chain sugars consisting of many sugars play important roles in an organism. For example, they decide ABO blood type. However, even if we attempt to study the functions of natural chain sugars, they can be obtained only in trace amounts because there are a wide variety of sugars due to the fact that functions vary from sugar to sugar, their purification is difficult, and they are found in only trace amounts in the natural world. Accordingly we have conducted research with the objective of developing an efficient synthesis method of sugar chains using structure-altered sugars. [Technology Classification]

There are many kinds of organic compounds in nature. They are utilized in various fields. Among these organic compounds, we have synthesized physiologically-active compounds and their related chemicals. For example, we have studied the synthesis of antibacterial compounds, enzyme-activity suppressing compounds, and highly oxidized carotenoids.Simple and highly selective methods are necessary in order to synthesize molecules such as terpenoids, phospholipids and alkaloids etc.Accordingly we have been studying novel and efficient synthetic methods using light, heat, oxygen, and organic metals etc. In this way, we have targeted on elucidating how the phenomenan called physiological-activity occurs at the chemical reaction level as well as developing and providing novel organic tool-molecules suitable for understanding of biological phenomena. The developing process in an animal from ovum to parent is called genesis. Fertile ovum consisting of one single cell grows by repeated cell division to become a human body consisting of about 60 trillions of cells. During the process of genesis, cells frequently move from the origin site to the predetermined site, where they grow into tissues or organs. For example, germ cells enter the testis or ovary, and the endothelial cells of the veins extend the veins by proliferation and migration. We have conducted research on the mechanisms of cell migration with use of nematode as an experimental material. The nematode is 1mm in length and is shaped like an earthworm. Even an adult nematode has only 959 cells and all the cell migrations in the process of genesis are known. Furthermore, about 70% of the nematode genes are similar to human genes. Most of the cell migration-controlling genes confirmed in the researches of nematodes also exist in humans and the cell migration mechanisms which have been evolutionarily conserved are becoming to reveal.
