Our bodies consist of as many as 60 trillion cells, in which the cells are regularly collocated and organically composed to build up various body parts such as tissues and organs. These function units mutually tie in and play respective roles to contribute to higher life phenomena. In order to use the newly created ES cells and iPS cells with versatility in differentiation for regenerative medicine, it is necessary to establish technology for enabling and regulating differentiation and tissues-construction. In our laboratory, we have proceeded research on the molecular basis for cell differentiation, tissue-construction, and the regulation mechanism using various human undifferentiated normal cells and mice as models. We have discovered regulation proteins for tissue-construction and have chemically synthesized the agonists and antagonists thereto. Their medical application is now under investigation. |
