This website is run by the Kansai Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry as the center of information for bio and medical devices in the Kansai region.

The objective of this site is to transmit information of the bio and medical device industry, research institutes, universities, and related organizations succeeding in the Kansai region to people nationwide and worldwide. We will introduce the core organizations and institutes of bio and medical device research, the present status of industrial activity, and the current activities for support and promotion of the bio and medical device field, thereby showing the potential of the Kansai region (constituted of the 7 prefectures Fukui, Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, Wakayama)

Potential of Kansai The potential of Kansai will be introduced in various dimensions The Activity Data of Kansai The activity of the Kansai region in relation to bio and medical devices is introduced. Basic data such as population and area, as well as data concerning the technology and industrial fields of bio and medical devices is shown in comprehensive statistical data. Bio and Medical Device Sites Websites run by local governments, public organizations, and universities, where a multitude of information can be gathered in relation to bio and medical devices, are introduced. Incubation Facilities Incubation facilities equipped with facilities and devices useful for research development have been listed. Useful information such as the scale of facilities, availability of bio-related laboratories, and contact information can be obtained quickly and easily. Biotechnology Related Projects In the Kansai region, industrial-academic-government cooperation is promoted for the activation of science technology and the Kansai economy. Projects are launch from various perspectives, such as creation of international centers for bioscience, formation of industrial clusters utilizing cumulative bioresearch, collaborations among researchers, challenges in new initiatives, nurturing of human resources, and commercialization support.

The Unique Characteristic of the Kansai Region Bio and Medical Device Field

The Kansai region has a long history of drug and medicine, starting in the nineteenth century from Tekijuku (predecessor of the Osaka University Medical Department) and pharmaceutical medicine wholesale street of Osaka Doshomachi. There are also many biotechnology related enterprises which have developed out of the brewing industry.

It is the strength of the Kansai region that technology arising from this history can be nurtured and developed into innovative technology by the pharmaceutical companies, research institutes, and monodzukuri (manufacturing) companies which are gathered in the region. The national and local government also takes an active part by promoting large-scale projects and constructing incubation facilities.
