vol.16@@yCanadaz SERVO-ROBOT JAPAN Co., Ltd
Last update: January 30, 2014

President Mr. Nobumasa Torii

Parent company headquarters: Canada
Established: July 1996
Address: 6-9-20 Nishinakajima, Yodogawa-ku, Osaka-city, Osaka Pref.
Line of business: Import and sales of laser sensors for welding and inspection, manufacturing and sales of welding equipment and robots

The company was established in 1996 as a Japanese subsidiary of the Canadian company SERVO-ROBOT Inc., the worldfs leader in intelligent welding automation through laser vision systems.
SERVO-ROBOT has excellent technical capabilities, and has received the Joseph F. Engelberger Robotics Award, the world's most prestigious robotics honor. The company develops and manufactures laser sensors and 3-D laser vision systems for process control and productivity control. The companyfs welding and measurement technologies are used in a wide range of systems such as pipe-manufacturing plants, steel mills, chemicals storage tanks, shipyards, wind turbine generators, automobile components, railway vehicles, construction equipment, excavators and shipbuilding equipment.

The following are excerpts from an interview with Mr. Torii, President of the Japanese subsidiary.

We deal with welding machines as well as sensors and inspection systems specialized for welding. Many Japanese manufacturers are using a large number of our products at their sites that use welding automation.
Our products are capable of welding even metals that exhibit diffuse reflection, such as aluminum and stainless steel. We therefore pride ourselves on having welding technology that no other companies have.
Welding inspection requires skills. Our portable welding inspection system WIKI-SCAN makes welding inspection easy and is very popular.

Why the research laboratory is located in Kansai:

We confirm our customersf requests in detail and manufacture products one by one, customizing them to fit the production line they will be installed on. So, in-depth discussions are essential when introducing our products. Even after delivery, close coordination is needed in order to promptly respond to Japanese companiesf specific requests. For this reason, we needed a Japanese subsidiary located near our customers.
Many manufacturers, who we anticipated would be our customers, were located in Kansai, and Kansai is close to central Japan, where many automotive companies are located. We therefore decided to set up our Japanese subsidiary in Kansai. When establishing a subsidiary, we received support from the Osaka city government and JETRO in choosing an office and carrying out the procedures for incorporation. That was a big help.

Future business activities:

In order to let many Japanese companies know about the benefits of our products, we showcase our products at many exhibitions. Based on the feedback we receive there, we will develop products that will be accepted more easily in the Japanese market.
Currently, we are manufacturing all our products in Canada. We are considering shifting some production from Canada to Japan to enable us to customize our products within Japan too in the future in order to precisely and promptly respond to customersf requests.
Moreover, we are planning to widen our field of operations, with an eye toward expanding into Indonesia, Malaysia and other Asian countries.
