Last update:July 3,2025
Located near the World Heritage Site of 'Byodoin,' you will find 'Showen Kumihimo,' a shop that manufactures and sells kumihimo in a street that retains its charming old-town atmosphere.
-What is “Kumihimo?”-
"Kumihimo" refers to decorative cords made by combining threads using traditional Japanese techniques. It is used in traditional Japanese clothing and has also been incorporated into modern fashion.
At Showen Kumihimo Uji Store, you can experience making cords by combining threads.
We visited the facility and experienced making kumihimo!
You can select your favorite color from six options.
(There may be cases where you can choose a different color available only for a limited time.)
Move the eight weights attached to the threads in a specified order.
You will create a single cord by repeatedly following the steps in the correct sequence.
You can choose any two from a strap, bag charm, or bracelet to customize the finished cord.”
The craftsman carefully gives the cord its final finish.
The work takes about 10 minutes to do, and then it is complete!
The process of moving the weights attached to the threads in order may feel a bit challenging at first, but since they accommodate small groups of up to about four people, the staff will provide ample support.
The pleasant sound of the wooden weights clinking together creates a soothing atmosphere, allowing you to spend time in a focused yet calming environment.
The experience can be easily completed in about 30 minutes to an hour, and the finished product is crafted to a high quality that resembles a commercial item, which is a significant attraction.
This experience has become particularly popular among visitors from Asia, including China, Taiwan, and South Korea. Since the experience takes place in a tatami room, participants can enjoy a distinctly Japanese atmosphere, which is a major attraction. Typically, participants sit on cushions during the experience, but stools are available for those who may find sitting on the floor difficult, such as elderly individuals or those unaccustomed to sitting like this.
